I took a community college course called Programming With GW_BASIC in the late 1980's.

I bought a used XT-compatible PC for $700.  It came with a 5-MB hard drive the size a
small toaster and I had to upgrade its BIOS chip and install an 8087 co-processor, so I could run
ACAD for MS-DOS. 

When I wrote BASM 8088 (and later 80286), I was grabbing everything I could find in the public
library,  in various PC magazines, and on BBS's ( remember those? ) to help further my knowledge
of machine language.  MS was downright stingy about sharing code back then.  Having access to
the GW_BASIC source at that time would have seemed like winning the lottery.

Today, not so much ...
